Solemn Ordinariate Mass in Rome

A broad church! Old English surplice, modern chasuble, Roman dalmatics and a baroque setting!

Yesterday, the feast of St. Mark the Evangelist, saw Mass celebrated in the Ordinariate Use in Rome, at the Roman basilica of Santa Maria in Campitelli, by Fr Mark Elliot Smith, parish priest of Our Lady of the Assumption & St. Gregory Warwick Street. He was assisted by two seminarians of the North American College. The NAC also provided servers for the occasion; including a seminarian for the Ordinariate of the Chair of Peter, who acted as MC.

The music included Healy Willan’s Communion Service No 2 as the setting, propers from “The Plainchant Gradual”, and JM Neale’s translation of Aeterna Christi Munera, the office hymn for the day. The Mass incorporated many aspects unique to the Ordinariate Use, including the Summary of the Law, the Prayer for the Church Militant and, the Prayer of Humble Access.

This, insofar as we are aware, is the first non-Pontifical Ordinariate Use Mass to be celebrated in the Eternal City and, as such an important historic event in the life of the Ordinariate. It is a great honour that it was celebrated by an English Ordinariate priest.
